About the Book
The Story
Ricarin believes morality is something that you have to work at. A “philosopher with bills to pay,” who earns his living as a caravan guard on the frontier, he is slowly assembling his “Hero’s Creed” along the way. But the violence of his life is getting easier, and that fact scares him more than any of the people he encounters. When he meets Scatha, a bounty hunter with no such qualms and her own ghosts, they will set far bigger changes in motion than either of them expected.
Ailith’s Human adopted parents told her she was a monster. At eight years old, she proves them right and sets out in search of her people, the Sealgairean – and is enslaved as soon as she finds them. They are a people whose language has no word for “mercy” and who see everyone else as food. It will take all of Ailith’s cunning and a lifetime of struggle to win freedom and a place among them.
When Ailith uncovers ancient machines that can fabricate advanced armor and weapons, the world’s balance of power shifts; and when Ricarin and Scatha’s caravan come seeking that same technology, they walk right into the waiting jaws of the Sealgairean. As they are hunted across the mountains, Scatha hatches a desperate plan to turn the tables.
At the gates of Ash, all three of them will meet for the first time and be forced to negotiate for survival. Each believes they are the hero of the story. All of them may be wrong. And all the while, the mind in the machines has its own reasons for wanting war.
